Narrative
All academic departments are expected to develop student-learning outcomes for each curriculum, assess the outcomes, and utilize the results to improve the programs as part of the on-going planning and review process. This is an integral part of the university’s
Institutional Effectiveness
program. The university has also instituted regular program reviews for all programs not reviewed by an external review agency such as AACSB, ABET, NCATE, etc.
The Provost has delegated program reviews at both the graduate and undergraduate levels to the Dean of the Graduate School. The current review schedule is available online. Academic Program Review Policy requires programs to provide the number of currently enrolled majors, the number of graduates from the program in the last 10 years, any awards or special recognition garnered by students and graduates, as well as evaluations from exit surveys (Self-Study items 7,9, 16 & 20).

Narrative
The degree programs at the University of New Orleans help to fulfill the university's mission. The Louisiana Board of Regents, in its Master Plan for Public Postsecondary Education: 2001, (Adobe p. 51)
categorizes the University of New Orleans "as an SREB Four-Year 2 institution, as a Carnegie Master’s Doctoral/ Research University–Intensive, and as a COC/SACS Level VI institution. It is committed to graduate education through the doctorate, will conduct research appropriate to the level of academic programs offered, and will have a defined ratio of undergraduate to graduate enrollment. The university does not offer associate degree programs. At a minimum, the university will implement Selective II admissions criteria." (Adobe p. 51)
The University of New Orleans Undergraduate/Graduate Catalog 2003-2005 (Adobe p. 11) lists the degree programs offered and summarizes the curricular requirements for each field of study. The baccalaureate degree programs at the University of New Orleans range from 120 semesters hours to 153 semester hours. All undergraduate students at the University of New Orleans must satisfy the General Education requirements (Adobe p. 34) to graduate. For graduate courses, the catalog provides the minimum semester-hour requirements for each degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours of course work beyond the baccalaureate for the Master's degree and a minimum of 60 semester hours of course work beyond the baccalaureate for a doctoral degree. The doctorate is not awarded solely on the basis of study, however faithful, extending over any prescribed period of time. This degree is conferred only for work of distinction in which the student displays power of original scholarship and only in recognition of achievement and marked ability.
The LSU System and AP New
assign primary authority in curriculum matters to the faculty. The Faculty Council Committee on Courses and Curricula provides primary oversight for undergraduate curricula, and the Graduate Council
for graduate curricula. These faculty committees review all program proposals and program changes to ensure the rigor and relevance of each program.
In addition, the
program review process,
whether conducted by an external accrediting body or by the university’s internal procedures, requires careful program review by the faculty of the department and further review by one or more external reviewers.

All degree programs meet minimum requirements as established by SACS and the Department of Education. Baccalaureate degree programs at the university range from 120 to 153 semester hours, Master’s programs range from 30 to 60 semester hours and may or may not include a thesis, and all doctoral programs are a minimum of 60 semester hours past the hours required for the baccalaureate degree. All undergraduate students must satisfy the
General Education requirements (Adobe p. 37)
in order to graduate.
Degree requirements
are defined under each curriculum in the 2003-2005 Undergraduate/Graduate Catalog. Length and content are commensurate with other accredited universities as established by SACS.
As established by the Courses and Curricula Committee, all educational programs are approved by faculty in the department, the College Courses and Curricula Committee, the Dean, the University Courses and Curricula Committee, the Provost, and the Chancellor. The Graduate Council must also approve any courses or programs at the graduate level. All new programs must be approved by the
LSU System Board of Supervisors,
as well as the
Louisiana Board of Regents.

Narrative
The University of New Orleans has procedures for addressing written student complaints in all areas.
Grade appeal policies for both undergraduate and graduate students are outlined in the
University of New Orleans Undergraduate/Graduate Catalog 2003-2005 (Adobe p. 36.)
These policies provide the student with a safeguard against receiving an unfair final grade in a course, while at the same time respecting the academic freedom of the instructor, which is vital to the integrity of the teaching process.
The University of New Orleans recognizes that, on rare occasions, serious extenuating circumstances may prevent the student from adhering to the established policies and procedures of the university, including observing published deadline dates for dropping a course or resigning from the university. The University Appeal Form, available in the
Registrar's Office
and all academic Dean's offices, is designed for these circumstances.
The University of New Orleans is a multicultural community composed of diverse students, faculty, and staff. A fundamental principle of the University of New Orleans is that there be an environment of mutual tolerance and respect, which is free of hostility toward, discrimination against, or harassment of any person based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, national origin, age, sexual orientation, marital or veteran status, or any other status protected by law. Every member of the university community is held strictly accountable for his or her behavior with regard to this standard. Policies relating to these matters are published by the Office of Equal Opportunity. Each major unit has a staff person designated as the Equity Officer. Complaints may be filed with any equity officer or with the Director of Equal Employment Opportunity who investigates complaints of discrimination. The Equity Officer reports directly to the Chancellor.
The
University of New Orleans Judicial Code
is predicated on the university's legal right and moral obligation to establish reasonable rules for academic and personal conduct and to deny admission to applicants or continued enrollment to students who do not meet or maintain these standards. The university does, in addition, reserve the right to review any action taken by civil or judicial authorities regarding its students or student organizations. Special conditions such as counseling and/or sanctions may be imposed on students or student organizations who are found in violation of these standards. The Code attempts to make expectations clear and to provide substantive and procedural due process through the procedures outlined in the Code. The Judicial Code is administered by the Associate Dean of Student Life for Judicial Affairs.
Other avenues of appeal include the Student Financial Aid Appeals Process and the Traffic and Parking Violations Appeals Procedure. Finally, Administrative Policy and Procedure Statement AP new
is designed for students to question formally the application of any university regulation, rule, policy, requirement, or procedure not otherwise covered by an established procedure.
