Feedback and Response

2.10  The institution provides student support programs, services, and activities consistent with its mission that are intended to promote student learning and enhance the development of its students. (Student Support Services)

Findings of the Off-Site Reaffirmation Committee

The narrative and supporting documentation provided confirm that UNO offers an appropriate range of student support programs and services directly aligned with the mission and strategic plan of the University. The evidence provided shows that the programs and services, including Accountability and Advocacy, Career Services, Counseling and Health Services, the Learning Resources Center, Student Involvement and Leadership, the Privateer Enrollment Center and New Student Orientation among others, actively provide for student needs from admission through graduation. Each maintains a focus on the overall well-being and on-going development of the whole student as evidenced in their departmental mission statements.

While the narrative states “All student support programs and services provided by the institution serve all level of students as well as students taking off-campus or distance education courses,” it is not clear how off-campus and distance education students access the programs and services.

Response and Actions Taken

As requested, information is provided regarding how off-campus and distance education students access the programs and services. As of the 2014-15 academic year, no classes are offered at off-campus sites. The only site previously in use, the Jefferson Center located in suburban New Orleans, is no longer used as an off-site campus. When in operation, no complete degree program was offered at the site. Rather, individual classes were offered based on convenience to residents of Jefferson Parish. Thus, students also took courses at the main campus and accessed student support programs and services on campus.

Distance education students include two groups: students who take individual distance courses within a traditional program of study and students who enroll in a distance program of study. Currently, UNO offers a limited number of distance education programs of study (B.A. Philosophy, BIS Interdisciplinary Studies, M.A. Romance Languages, M.S. Hospitality and Tourism). Thus, very few students are in need of accessing campus services on a remote basis. Table 1 provides information for how distance education students access student support programs and services. The table provides a brief description of how students request the service and how the service is provided, as well as a link to the information regarding the service. To facilitate ease of use, a web-page dedicated to distance education students is hosted on the UNO website.
